Morris Arboretum, Widener Visitor and Education Center
CVMNEXT Construction completed a comprehensive multi-phase improvement program at the historic Widener Visitor and Education center at the University of Pennsylvania’s Morris Arboretum. Comprised of two separate, late-19th century structures, the Widener Center originally served as the gardener’s cottage, carriage house and stables on the grounds of the then-private estate of John Morris. CVMNEXT was engaged as design-build construction manager for this transformative project, and led the multi-discipline design and construction team.
Phase one of the restoration plan included the conversion of underutilized lab space in the main building into a commercial kitchen, and the renovation of the two-story wagon house to create public restrooms and storage. This phase also included a comprehensive HVAC modernization. Phase two enlarged and improved the building’s front entry, making it ADA accessible, and included sitework and landscaping.
